Merrill and Carol Oster PINNACLE PRAIRIE
In 1969, Merrill Oster, a Cedar Falls native, returned home to launch Communication Consultants (ComCo), a marketing advisory firm, the base for what became a financial publishing firm with a global reach.
In 1973 Merrill founded Professional Farmers of America. The Pro Farmer newsletter became an immediate and stunning success reaching tens of thousands of farmers and industry leaders. Pro Farmer changed how farmers saw themselves: as professionals. They leveled the playing field between farmers and the huge grain corporations by teaching Pro Farmer members how to use futures markets to manage risk. In 1976, Oster acquired
Commodities Magazine with 3,000 subscribers and grew it into
Futures Magazine with 65,000 subscribers.
Futures became the most highly regarded publication in the world’s fast-growing commodity and financial futures markets.
In total the Oster companies assembled 400 business associates in 16 countries. They served 250,000 financial decision makers worldwide from the original base in Cedar Falls, Iowa where it also published the Cedar Falls Citizen Newspaper and the Hometowner shopper.
Along the way, his firm, Parkade Properties, bought and renovated 100,000 square feet of office space stimulating a dramatic rebirth of Main Street in Cedar Falls. These days Pinnacle Prairie, a 720-acre real estate development in Cedar Falls, enjoys his focus and vision.
Merrill is also founder of Pinnacle Forum, a leadership organization aimed at training a wave of cultural influencers to invest their lives in making this a better world through Christian service. Carol and Merrill have invested lots of wonderful time in their grandchildren and great grandchildren. They split their time between Cedar Falls, Aurora, IL and Scottsdale, AZ.
